K-9

Today, when Hung is alone, they will receive a text message from Cobalt Ox.

Hey, meet me at the arcade? We need to talk in private. Come to the back by the pinball machines.

Linger for too long, and they will find Ox's own prinny at their side, ushering them toward the The Arcade. There aren't many people in here now as the arcade has just opened for the day, so navigating to the back where the pinball machines are isn't as hectic as it would be in the evening. There they will find Cobalt Ox, who gives them a little wave before nodding their head in the direction of a nearby door labeled 'STAFF ONLY'.

This room is a storage closet full of supplies for the arcade, but there is a table and two chairs for Hung to sit down at if they choose. Once the door is closed behind them, Cobalt Ox will lean against it as they talk.

"Okay, this is going to sound kinda rude, but I promise I didn't choose the name for this. Think you can do a little extra work for me from now on?"

On their phone, Hung will find a new app available to them: K-9. In the app, they will find a set of rules that they must accept in order to continue:

RULES

1. On Fridays after investigations, the K-9 will pick one of the victims.
2. During the subsequent trial, the K-9 can choose to use their role, which will notify them of any evidence found that relates to that victim's death. The K-9 can only use their role once per trial, and it must be used at least 30 minutes or more before the end of the trial.
3. The K-9 will not know the exact amount of evidence to be found, nor will they know if they still need to find more evidence. All they will learn is if evidence that has been found at the moment they use their role is related to their chosen victim's death or not.
4. Forged evidence will still be considered as related to the case.
5. If there is only one death in a given week, then the K-9 will not be able to use their role.
6. The K-9 must keep this role a secret.

After reading the rules and accepting, Hung will be greeted with a new screen saying "SEE YOU SATURDAY!". Once they close the app, they will not be able to open it again until Saturday during the trial, nor will anyone else will be able to see or access the app or the information within.

After Hung closes out of the app, Cobalt Ox sighs and runs a hand through their hair. "With any luck you won't really have to do any work, but it's here if it's needed. We'll meet again every Friday, but if you have any questions now then I can answer them."

[ staring down at the app, before he looks back up at ox. he's clearly very upset about - well, both of the deaths, actually. chiemi was also one of their jailbirds! and they didn't find her! but he sure did find norma!

he takes off his gloves and sets them down, rubbing at the jailbreak friendship bracelet on underneath them around his wrist. ]

... I mean, glad I can help? But - is this a new thing? Because of what happened last week? Or was it already built in?

[Yeah. Yeah they're feeling these losses too. Neither of them were Oxen but they were still decent people.]

I just found out about it on Monday. I was kind of hoping it wouldn't need to be used, but here we are.

It's not much. But we can't help in trials, so this is all I can do.

[ he's passively looking around for triangles in all of this, but his mind is kind of elsewhere, considering. ]

I wasn't... close, really, to either of them. But we all went into trying to get Mika out together, and that's still a bond. And even if we didn't even know each other, neither of them would have deserved this.

[ he looks down for a moment, brow pinched. ]

... we went somewhere, yesterday. Me, Danny, Jolyne. Another group did, too. And we got these weird messages. This popping up out of the blue, the rules changing, those notes - it's making me think that there's definitely a villain behind all of this.

I knew you had disappeared and came back, but...what do the messages say?

[ he reaches into his pocket and pulls out the one he received. because i don't think this is either ray or mira, i'll provide it in text for ease of you not having to rifle through mod notes. ]

These heroes are unable to return to the worlds they call home while they have yet to win their competition. If a team loses, all those within the team, present and future, those worlds they hail from will come under the light of the moon. Those worlds will be forever changed with the loss of the heroes hailing from them. There is nothing better than a hero under distress.

By winning they will be putting their companions here at risk. By losing, their homes will be rewritten to be completely different, erasing their place within it. A dire situation indeed. A benefit no matter the outcome.

The one Nico had was shorter. About how things were too boring, so they wanted to raise the stakes, something about heroes in "the next round" having to take the chance to return home from someone else.

"One death each week is enough to keep the door open. Kill, or lose everything any of them have cared about. Let's see how heroic they can be in those conditions."

What's this about 'the next round' though? There wasn't a competition before, it was just 12 of us being heroes.

But this...this might be the information we've been looking for. To find out what's going on here.

... apparently some of the civilians were talking, during Mika's execution? About how they hadn't seen one of those in a while? They were talking about it like they'd seen it before. But if they had, it would've had to be before you guys got here, wouldn't it?

Because you've been here for months. You lost some people, but I heard it was to fights with villains, not because of... [ he lifts his phone up, to indicate the K-9 app. victims. ]

Right, we came here and we fought villains, but nobody got executed and the only deaths were from a big fight. Not all of this.

But...could someone have been here before us? I thought we were the first.

[tongshi]

I mean, this could all have been faked. [ indicating the note ] We don't know where they came from. We just found them in the getaway cars.

But... I don't know why civilians would be playing along with it if it was faked. And this whole K-9 thing, the rules for us, the rules for you... someone higher than the mayor ordering Mika's execution... it doesn't feel right. It's all organized? And this makes it sound like maybe it did happen before.

Then...it's probably for the best to keep looking for papers like this. Maybe more information will come out and we can put the pieces together.

It might be a good idea to share these with everyone too, so they can see what they need to be on the lookout for.

Nico and I shared them with the people involved in the jailbreak. I'll try to make sure that him, Jolyne, Whisper, Danny, and Hans help to spread the word.

There's... there are some people that aren't sure if they can trust you guys. But I want to believe that you're all just stuck in this with us, and doing your best, too. If I find out more, I'll make sure to bring it to you, too. Make good use of meeting up on Fridays, if we wind up having to.

Yeah, I'm not surprised. Everyone is going to have their own opinions on things. But I want to help, at least. And I'll share everything I find with you too.

I'll do what I can, with this responsibility. And I'll find out what I can about what's going on, so that we can get to the bottom of all of this - especially since it doesn't seem like we can stop the trial or an execution from happening this weekend, will we?

But after a moment they reach out to take Hung's hands, theirs likely dwarfed by Hungs because they tiny.]

Not at this point, no. We just...have to get through it. And I won't even be at the trial either, so I can't offer moral support.

But I believe in all of you and your ability to find justice for Norma and Chiemi. And after all of that, we'll try to prevent another catastrophe next week.

Note that this does not include evidence found after 7pm EST, nor does it include evidence that was found at the scene but not turned in.
