[No matter what he was doing on Thursday, Danny will find himself suddenly tripping on something. An object on the floor, a crack in the ground, whatever. And as he falls, he will find reality warping around himself. He's no longer falling to the close ground, but now he's falling through the sky.
It takes a few moments, but Danny will eventually realize that this is a dream.
Far below him now is a giant dragon, facing off against dozens of knights which look like toys compared to the size of this beast. He's still falling, but he can somewhat control how he falls if he wants to go in a specific direction.]
[ i would just like to point out the cosmic stupidity of someone with intangibility powers tripping on something, but that would be danny's life
instead of controlling where he falls in this dream, or deciding what he wants to do, danny decides to take a broader look around. how is the fight going? what's the setting here? is this just a disembodied fight in dreamland, or is there a world beyond this?
also he wonders if he should be concerned about splatting any time soon, or if this place runs on dream logic and he'll be infinitely falling until he makes a choice ]
He can't see for miles and miles or anything, but he can see that the area around here is mostly forest with a few clearings in the trees, and everything is scorched. Indeed, the dragon is breathing fire every now and then, and a couple knights get caught in the fiery blast while he looks around. There is a castle off in the distance, but it's too far away for Danny to reach.
This place is indeed running on dream logic, and though he feels like he is falling he won't actually fall to the ground until he makes a decision. Will he intervene in the fight between the knights and the dragons, or will he stay out of it? And if he does intervene, what side will he choose?]
[ hmm. maybe normally he'd intervene, but today? today, he's not feeling it. This fight isn't his business, he won't get involved. instead, he'll just tilt himself to aim for one of the clearings in the forest. ]
[No matter what he is doing on Thursday, at some point Albedo will walk through a doorway, and instead of going where he intended on going he will find himself in a large chemical lab full of vials, beakers, and every kind of chemistry tool known to man.
It takes a few moments, but Albedo will eventually realize that this is a dream.
Still, he has a lot to look through here, if he so chooses.]
[ well you know what they say - curiosity killed the cat.
every after realising this is a dream, it doesn't stop him from stopping in front of the lab's shelves and workstations and all the flasks and the like.
whatcha got for me. can he pick up one or two of the flasks to examine them a little closer? ]
[ he will do some experimenting in a bit, clearly.
what kind of liquids and ingredients are there for him to select? the fantasy kind? or just the regular kind - he's going to start mixing things together in small quantities just for curiosity's sake ]
[No matter what he is doing on Thursday, Ryuki will find himself staring at his phone. The phone starts to feel warm in his hand, and the screen starts to glitch out. Bits and pieces of data start popping out and falling to the ground, littering the floor with words and phrases that share scraps of information if he looks closely at them.
It takes a few moments, but Ryuki will eventually realize that this is a dream.
The bits of data continue to pop out of his phone screen, and the ones on the ground start crawling away. Better move quickly if you don't want to lose it!]
[ Oh cool, a regular Monday for him. He almost misses it, starting to zone out as soon as reality starts to fragment bit by bit, but then he snaps to attention.
Wait, he needs those. He can't afford to lose those, maybe. Trying to grab at fragments of data, even though a more logical mindset would acknowledge such things should be intangible. ]
[Yes, that would be more logical, but who needs logic in a dream?
The bits of data bounce around, but Ryuki can slowly pick them up. Each one he grabs disappears into his fingertips, and it's like the knowledge is being soaked up into his mind. Suddenly Ryuki knows everything there is to know about traffic light systems. It's really how much he knows already, but in the dream he thinks it's everything.]
[Eventually the three boys will be taken to the Magical Girl Support Institute. There they are led to a large board room, and they're invited to sit around the table with their parents. A woman walks in carrying a few folders, and she does stop to nod at Danny's parents quickly before setting her stuff down. They work in the same field, so they would have seen each other at some point.]
"Thank you for coming here. I'm Doctor Glenn. I'm sure all of you have heard of the Magical Girl Support Institute, right? We study magical girls to find out more about how their magic works and the best way to support them in the fight against the monsters."
"We don't know what happened to any of you. Only people who identify as girls have ever had magic. This is a first in the history of our city. And given the special circumstances, I've asked you all here to make a request of you."
[She sets the folders on the table. Each one is labeled with a name: Kuruto Ryuki, Danny Fenton, and Albedo Lastname.]
"We will keep files on all of you to track what is going on with your bodies and the magic you have. To make tracking easier, we would like the three of you to form a team together."
[You three would know just how important teaming up is. Fighting solo is extremely dangerous. There's plenty of girls out there fighting, but they have to spread out through the town to protect all of it and there might not be another girl right by if you go down. Deaths do happen, and 78% of magical girl deaths are girls who went out solo and got into trouble when nobody was there to back them up. Albedo's mom was also part of a team, as was Tama.]
[ He's just fussing with his sleeves as he waits in the lobby with his parents and brother, who is probably TOTALLY sparkly-eyed at the whole, being able to be in the Magical Girl Support Institute, whoa!! Wishes he was born a girl so he could participate and uphold safety of the city!!
Meanwhile, Ryuki, not feeling it very much, because he wasn't ever much the strong one of the two. He thinks about Tama, the big sister next door -- always sweet if not teasing him, the quiet nights where she returned with injury, in the care of Aiba and Marco. ]
A team to do what...?
[ He already knows the answer, he thinks. Not that he wants to admit it. ]
[ Danny is also excited, but not quite sparkly-eyed. He's fully aware of how dangerous this can and will be, through his parents' work, completely unblinded by the celebrity of it all, but he's still excited for the chance to help! ]
Well, for now. But we're going to work together, we'll learn each other's moves and habits along the way!
[The three boys get signed up and they start at Future's Promise Academy within a few days. To be sure, they turn quite a few heads. But as it turns out, most of the girls are very accepting of the trio. There's a few outliers who grumble about it, but the general attitude from everyone is "oh nice, more help".
And the help is truly needed. Girls rotate in and out of the school on a regular basis, so there's always spots on teams that need to be filled and patrol routes that need filling. Given that magic seems to last for only 3-4 years at most, it's a constant cycle and there's always things to do.
School is easier though. It's shorter, and there's not as many of the 'filler' classes as in public school. And with school not starting until 10 am, there's enough time to get sleep and still go to school each day.
A couple weeks later is when things start to change though. It's time for their first night out fighting. They've seen other groups fight before, but now it's their turn.
Dr. Glenn is there with a couple recording devices to collect data. And also Danny's parents are there, because they have no fear of monsters whatsoever and they want to cheer Danny (and the other boys too) on.
Dr. Glenn is the one who addresses them right before 10 pm hits.]
"Alright, team Radical. We have another team not too far away if things go poorly, so don't be afraid to call for help if you need it. We'll be nearby as well, but we can't help with fighting the monsters."
[It's understandable. None of them are immune to monster poison.]
[ His family is so happy for him to be getting friends. Some words of encouragement and ruffling of his hair later, he's ready to be a team with Albedo and Danny!!
He's brilliant so surely the new school won't be too hard in terms of academics anyway, he's quick to pick up. The new hours are a little weird, but he still wakes up early to have breakfast with his family anyway before he crams in a bit of morning study, as well as trying to use and get used to his scanning ability before he sets off.
The combat bit is a little harder for a 14-year old Ryuki, but honestly, he picks up on that decently quick too. He may look a bit noodley but he can be fast. His parkour skillsTM.
When the day finally comes, he feels better prepared, but he can't help but fidget with his sleeves a bit nervously anyway. ]
I'm alright. [ Zinger here. He glances at the other two, are we all good? ]
[ Danny settles into the new rhythm fairly quickly, and it helps that his parents are so supportive and understanding. his sister a little less so, but she cares too in her own way. His grades have improved in a school environment where he doesn't have to worry about bullies so much, he's bonded with his new teammates and found a rhythm with them, and he still makes time to hang out with his friends (Nico) in between everything!
All in all, things have been going smoothly and he's gotten pretty comfortable with his fire--offensively, defensively, and for maneuvering. He's primarily a heavy hitter, but he's no slouch when it comes to speed either.
But it's probably not a good idea to get too cocky on his first real night out, so Danny shakes the confidence out of place just enough to keep him on his toes, and lights up a fist. ]
[ and already transformed, too! albedo's not as quick as ryuki or as hard a hitter as danny is, truly, but he's got his magic and potions to stall for time and to help get them out of sticky situations, or even amplify his teammate's powers if needed, so in that sense, he's the perfect support to their little trio, even if his teammates are more excited than he is.
(it's not really his fault - more because his mom has been cautioning how dangerous the monsters are even with poison immunity, so he's being more careful than anything, especially on their very first night out actually possibly fighting monsters!) ]
[ looking over at dr. glenn ] Any idea of what kind of monsters we're likely to come up against?
[ small fry, he's hoping. one that will allow them to send whatever data the magical girl support institute needs and send them off while they get used to fighting on the ground as a team. ]
[Time passes. After that first questionable night, things get better. The trio learn how to use their powers more effectively, they learn better techniques for fighting, and Ryuki gains more information in his scan skill. Three months after their first night out, and they're doing just fine on their own patrol routes. No more adult supervision needed, though Dr. Glenn and Danny's parents do show up from time to time for MGSI-related tasks. Minor injuries happen sometimes, but nothing more severe than a sprain or some shallow cuts and bruises.
Until one night, everything changes.
The night is going on as normal. The inner barrier is a bright white color, which is nice. It gives extra illumination to see with during the nightly battles. But rather suddenly, at 1:45am, the inner barriers all shut off.
It's early. The outer barrier isn't up yet. The monsters are still here.
There's nothing protecting any of the houses- or the people inside- except for the magic-users.]
[ WE ARE HERE FOR SO LONG that's so funny. Our half-year CYOA into the past. Ryuki recovers from his injuries over time and all is well. If anything, it made him double down on training in the physical realm even harder so that he doesn't end up being a burden and getting someone else hurt on his behalf again.
It's another night of patrol, and they have fifteen minutes left to go until their watch is over. He can't wait to get to go crawl back into bed and sleep off the tiredness, orange eyes blinking from a rooftop in the streets for any last stragglers who want to try messing with the city.
And then. ]
?! Wha --
[ Using his eyesight to immediately look for swathes of red and their locations respective to teams, so that he can order out their squad to the closest swarm that won't be handled by someone else first. Tell him deets. ]
Something's wrong. I mean, it has to be, right? This isn't normal!
[ HE THINKS. he's only been at this for a few months but he's had a lifetime of nights with the barrier and being guarded by magical girls and he's never heard of anything like this before. ]
...first thing's first. Let's try to keep things contained.
[ Danny lets loose a line of flames along the buildings lining each side of the street--deadly to monsters, but harmless to people. Although he hopes that the sight of fire deters anyone from leaving their homes while the barrier's down. ]
[ ... well this sucks! because he doesn't have a full inventory anymore and his magic reserves are probably down to like, 60% but it's Fine. if he needs to conserve energy or expend it in creating last minute things that come with the barrier coming down unexpectedlt, he'll deal.
in the meantime though, he's tapping them both on the shoulder - let's just say that he's been working with his mom on developing new formulas in the past few months, so what he's holding out to both danny and ryuki is a +1 stealth stat serum, good enough to keep their footsteps quieter and make them less obvious for the next 10 to 15 minutes or so. ]
