They can see the future, and not just one version of it. They know which timelines lead to the best and worst results for this world. And they do what they can to avoid the bad ones.
Sometime in the future, thousands of people will die. Or... they won't! But it all depends on whether or not you [looking at axel] die today. If you survive today, all those people will die — and who knows if you'll be one of them? Or you could die now, and cause the chain reaction that will lead to all of those lives being spared.
