My guess is that someone either knew the truth ahead of time and nudged everyone away from the important clues, or they figured it out in the middle of trial and did the same.
As a whole the group isn't incapable. But it's susceptible to misinformation because everyone seems to trust one-another.

tiger, what's going on? the only person who should've known ahead of time would be the killer, but deflecting that hard with only one person isn't going to be easy. you make it sound like multiple people knew.

Also, if there is a small group of people under the most suspicion- five or less is good for this- redo any checks they made, and don't allow them to make further checks.
Finally, keep track of who is close to who. If Ryuki were in that "most suspicious" group, for example, I would not trust you for unbiased opinions or checks.

it’s going to be that balance of knowing something will hurt, and knowing it’s wrong, but knowing the alternative is worse. this isn’t a popularity contest. it’s the law.
trying to save someone who shouldn’t have died would be a pretty impressive bonding moment. at the very least, it gives you an idea of who shares similar values to you.
