whatever you were doing before this moment becomes irrelevant: one moment, you blink, and the next, you're standing at the top of a long set of stone stairs, in the middle of what looks like a cave. if you turn around, there's nothing to see behind you. if you look forward, light from above shines down at the bottom of the stairs, and you can just see a halo of blue light in center of what appears to be some sort of dais.
the stone structure of the dais is in the shape of an octagon. you hold a lantern in your hand, and if you make the descent, you might realize you aren't alone - there are four staircase, all leading to the center platform, and four people on this particular adventure.
nimona, datz, kogitsunemaru, and ponta.
as you descend the stairs - assuming that you do, of course - you will find that this place feels quite sacred. it's hard to escape the just slightly oppressive aura of something holy and important that presses down on you as you reach the center of the dais. it isn't a bad feeling. it's warm. comforting, almost, like the hug of an old friend, like recognition of your abilities and your power, like a light in the darkness. in the very center of the dais sits a massive goblet structure: within that, a blue flame flickers, strong and true.
at each point of the octagonal dais stands a stone statue. they are worn with the sands of time, but their faces and poses are visible to you, and at their bases, words have been carved into the stone, readable by lantern light.
AELFRIC THE FLAMEBRINGER. - a bearded man in vestments, carrying a staff. AEBER, PRINCE OF THIEVES. - a man with flowing hair, wielding a dagger. ALEPHAN, THE SCHOLARKING. - a wizened man in robes, holding a book. BIFELGAN, THE TRADER. - a man holding a set of scales. BRAND, THE THUNDERBLADE. - a man with his hands on the hilt of an austere sword. DOHTER, THE CHARITABLE. - a woman, holding up a jar DRAEFENDI, THE HUNTRESS. - a woman with a spear. SEALTICGE, LADY OF GRACE. - a woman in the midst of a graceful dance.
talk to each other, get your bearings, figure out what's going on, but know this: as you talk, you'll feel the urge to approach one of the statues. there is no hint to tell you which, no choice to be made for you - only the sensation that you are meant to examine one, as if it is your destiny.
[ isn't this a new and exciting experience? kogitsunemaru is no stranger to oddities and strange things occurring but there certainly is an extra wariness in him when it happens now. for all that he is confident in his abilities, even the fox has learned to take extra care when in a place like this.
it helps, at least, to know wherever they have been brought is sacred. there's less of a chance of being smited upon arrival but it certainly does little to ease the tension in his shoulders. the gods never call for good reasons after all, and given the current state of their group, clearly, this means nothing good.
he glances up at the statues, acknowledges the sensation tugging at him, and glances over his current group of kits. (yes datz, you count as a wee bab too.) ]
[she nearly drops the lantern, first off, so startled to be here. she looks at the other three that are close by, absolutely confused, and then instinctively scuttles a little closer to datz, watching the other two warily.
she'll make her way down with the others, and when kogi speaks, she looks away, up at the statues. she likes the one with the spear. that's neat.]
... Man. I was just saying I hadn't gone yet to Danny. [she grumbles, holding her lantern closer.] ... So what do we do?
[ Ah... after weeks of seeing his companions vanish to spheres beyond his reach, finally it's Ponta's turn to make the experience. He doesn't know if he's ready for it, but ready doesn't factor into it.
His companions... largely people he has neglected to get to know well. This should be interesting, for better or for worse.]
In this situation... seems like the only way out is through.
[ Ponta raises his lantern, trying to get the lay of the land, but all that really jumps at his eye is the statues and the magnetic pull they seem to hold. ]
when the bright light fades, the four of you are standing at the entrance to the bustling town of wellgrove! it's a bright, warm spring day in the leaflands, as it almost always is, and sunlight dapples through the trees, marking the picturesque cobblestone streets.
here, the hubbub of town life is quaint and charming. at the entrance of town, and from your viewpoint, wellgrove unfolds as follows. there are a few townhouses, each with gardens, and people commune around them here and there. several merchant stands line the streets, and you can see an inn and a tavern, as well as a large building that rises above the rest, labeled Wellgrove Department Store - Now Open!
you also may notice that your new outfits came with a bag. each of you has a new inventory! aside from your weapons, you find the following on your person.
✨ One medium healing grape ✨ One medium healing plum ✨ 100 gold leaves currency, not actual leaves
as well as your weapons as mentioned in the previous tag!
it seems as if you have been dropped here with little explanation, but you have new abilities to play with. what would you like to do? ]
[ help he looks incredibly out of place in red and gold and by the expression he's making, he knows it too. ]
It seems as if I've momentarily changed teams.
[ just call him a phoenix ig. anyway! group huddle before we waddle into oblivion. kogi uses grandpa privileges to call attention and also because i cursed myself into first ]
I assume we've been brought here specifically for a reason, especially with the outfits to match. We can continue as a group unless you think splitting up would be for the best. One to find information, the other to find shelter or such. Unless somebody has a better idea?
okay well first. nimona is delighted to have wolf ears and a tail. she grins a little at this, patting her own ears, looking over her shoulder at her tail. it waves back and forth easily, and it feels natural - this is something she could do at home, so it feels... well, comforting. as far as the rest goes... she looks at the owl.]
... Glory. [she says, looking at the owl on her arm.] Subtle.
[the light, huh. no idea what that's referencing. anyway. she shifts the owl to sit on her shoulder for now, and pats herself down. a bow, some... money? a grape. she looks at the grape but resists the urge to eat it.]
I guess we can stick together? Whatever. [she's a bit wary of the whole crowded area in general, but that's fine.] There's a department store over there.
the group decides to head to the forest to confront the source of the mysterious purple fog, if it claims to be in the forest, or whatever in the world is causing all of these mysteries just outside of the city.
by the time you traverse through wellgrove and make it to the entrance of the forest, night has well and truly fallen. it's very, very dark: the moon is new today, and there's only the light of the stars overhead and your lanterns to guide your way.
upon entering this forest, there's no strange purple fog, but a path ahead of you, labeled with a small wooden sign, the animal trail appears to be clear.
crick walks with your group, a hand on his broadsword. his eyes are focused ahead, and he's frowning, deeply, because he can feel the unsettling aura of this place just as well as you can. the longer you stand still here, the more it feels like something is watching you.
the very first thing you might notice is that it is silent. the wind occasionally rustles through the trees, but there's no chirping of bugs. no birdsong. nothing.
the night here is dark and oppressive. ahead of you lies a pathway. do you tread lightly? carefully? or do you move confidently and swiftly into the night? ]
anyway, kogi too is treading careful steps, one hand firmly around his blade, the other holding the gifted lantern high. ]
Watch yourselves carefully. We know little about what to expect.
[ this really is just pick a direction wander in, huh? as the unfortunate tank of the group, he will continue to lead them in absolute useless confidence until someone calls out to stop ]
[oof. well, nimona isn't exactly scared of the dark, so she's fine, but her eyes do faintly glow, out here.
and - well, the dark is no problem, but the lack of bugs and birds is unnerving to her. she knows very well that the places that even birds don't go are the most dangerous. nimona is not a very cautious person, but she is instinctive. so she tries to make her way through right behind kogi and crick, though she's keeping track of ponta and datz, too.
actually, she tells glory to try and get them a bird's eye view of the place, if possible.]
[ kogitsunemaru. man, that injury hurts, huh? you find yourself walking slowly through the forest, the purple fog thick and heavy. your leg, upon inspection, is no longer gushing blood from your injuries, but a strange purple marking has begun to trail up the inside of your calf. that’s probably fine.
ahead of you, you think, lies a path. you’ve been separated from your compatriots. you have your lantern, your weapons, and the fog ahead of you.
He doesn't have anything he can do but press forward, does he? There are people depending on him, and he's not just about to let this forest get the best of him, purple shadow things aside. The markings get a cursory inspection but right now, as long as he can put weight on it, the maybe probably poison will have to wait for later. ( ....maybe he should tourniquet it from spreading....?)
For now, he raises the lantern, holds his sword tight, and moves forward ]
kogi finds he can put weight on his leg without too much trouble, so that's good. if he pauses, the darkness doesn't seem to get too much worse.
as he moves forward, he'll recognize he is still in the forest, right where he left off. a path branches left, and right, and the fog oozes over his head. the lantern flickers, once, but continues to give off warm light, keeping the space kogi stands well lit.
a single sliver of moonlight breaks through the canopy of the trees, through the purple fog that leaks in the area, and seems to almost dance down the path to the left. the path to the right is a mystery.
[ nimona! you… are not alone, but it might feel like it. glory is with you - the owl hoots softly as you stand at the beginning of a very, very dark path.
I don’t like it here. she says, quietly, but she respects your wishes from before and just hovers nearby, nervous. the purple fog is getting thicker, but you can still see the shapes of the trees and the ground below your feet by lantern light.
ahead of you, you think, lies a path. you’ve been separated from your compatriots. you have your lantern, your weapons, and the fog ahead of you.
[tell him i'm sorry, crick had said, and nimona has to just. take a second, because she can still see the way that temenos looked after the comic pages flickered past. she drags in a deep breath, sad, and picks up her axe.
alone, in the woods. well. that's not new.
she starts moving forward. the further she goes, though, the less she wants glory to be away from her, despite everything. so eventually, she reaches out for her owl to stay with her. please don't go.]
[ glory says, immediately - the second she reaches for her, the owl flutters to nimona's arm and perches carefully on her, pressing close and away from the oppressive fog.
you stand on your path, and begin to walk forward. the fog is murky and dark, but you're still in the woods, and your animal instincts can pick up that the scent here is wrong. it's not death, or rot, but something's off.
like the others, your path diverges. to the left, the path goes from dirt, to stone. to the right, the path remains dirt. the fog swirls around the two of you.
down the path to the left, you hear a laugh. it's bright and manic, a little wild. familiar. to the right, the path remains a mystery. the fog blankets what lies ahead.
[ ponta. with your injuries mostly healed, you find yourself now standing alone at the front of the path. you were ready to move forward, before - you saw the purple fog and knew it had to be stopped.
ahead of you, you think, lies a path. you’ve been separated from your compatriots. you have your lantern, your weapons, and the fog ahead of you.
[ Against better judgement, Ponta isn't scared, just apprehensive. Whatever lays ahead, it's between him and his return to Oceanside, where matters are still unfinished.
The place he needs to return to, the hell that is his current stage. He can't remain in this forest.
your steps take you deeper into the forest! around you, the fog is getting thicker. the air feels oppressive, but it isn't impossible - your lantern shines the light ahead of you, guiding your pace.
a path forks in front of you. there are still no animals or noises - everything is eerily silent and heavy. to the left, the dirt path is mostly obscured. to the right, the path moves from dirt to stone.
there's the sound of someone crying. it's distant - a hiccup of a sob of a young girl. it comes from the right. the left path remains a mystery. where would you like to go? ]
[ datz. you came out of that alright, but now, you are alone. the darkness has become quietly eerie, and you find yourself standing at the front of a path, the purple fog beginning to thicken with every step that you take.
ahead of you, you think, lies a path. you’ve been separated from your compatriots. you have your lantern, your weapons, and the fog ahead of you.
[ ...well, he doesn't like a damn thing about what just happened there, and he likes the apparent fact that they've all been split up even less. he tries calling out nimona's name once in case she's closer by than it seems and he just can't see her in the dark, but when that doesn't work...
yeah, nothing to do but go forward and hope all the paths in these woods eventually lead to the same place. ]
[ datz calls out for nimona. it feels like his voice echoes around him in the forest, before the harsh canopy of the trees swallows it up into nothing.
the purple fog is thicker, here. the more he walks forward, the more blatant that becomes, and every footstep he takes makes it feel even more pressingly like something here is watching. and as datz makes his way forward, he'll find himself standing at a place where his path diverges.
to the left, the path is dirt road. to the right, it is much the same, though the canopy seems a touch thicker, and the wind rushes through the trees. distantly, on the path to the right, he can hear the sound of someone crying. the path to the left is a mystery.
well, to start. ponta is currently being dragged backwards by the shadows of his own regrets and despair. he's managed to stun the monster that shredded up his leg, but it doesn't seem like it's going to be stunned forever. no one in octopath traveler fights alone for very long.
kogitsunemaru is also currently nowhere to be found. (ari's asleep) nowhere to be
datz is in remarkably good shape aside from some cuts and scrapes, so he comes dashing onto the scene, switching to his sword so he can cut more Hand at once!!! ]
[she runs down the stairs, across the water, and - well, she threw her weapon to the ground, but she's here. she doesn't even bother trying to go for her axe or anything like that she just shouts for glory to attack the hand, and goes after the hand herself, ripping at it with her fingers.]
I. START.
